Our Teaching Philosophy

Music is a joy to teach, and therefore it should be a joy to learn. We endeavour to develop whole musicians, not just robots who will read symbols off a page, but human beings who understand and feel the sounds that they are creating. With young children, Kodály-based techniques keep the lessons child-centred by using their voices (speaking and singing), their bodies playfully through games, and other activities in order to understand the music that they will play on their instrument. As the child grows, age-appropriate activities continue (singing and clapping still comes in very handy!) in order to develop their musicianship skills.

Playing an instrument involves intricate physical activity, so developing proper technique from the very start will avoid frustrating habits which may otherwise slow the student down later on. Correct technique is encouraged and developed in a friendly manner, no matter what age the student begins, through creativity and imagery.

Students of all ages are welcome, and including adult beginners and adolescents. Music is about self-expression, and as we live in a fast-paced and chaotic world, this form of art can help remove ourselves from it all if at least temporarily. By joining The Music Grove, students can achieve their goals, with motivation, proper training, and attention to their individuality and needs.
